Prologue

*`*`*`*`*

On the bridge of a massive, white starship with the bright red letters S-A-T-A-N on its hull, a young woman with dark green hair was slouched in deep sleep over a rather large computer console. After a while, she was slowly brought awake by a flashing light labeled emergency frequency. He drowsy eyes fluttered open revealing pink, catlike eyes.

"Huh?" The woman tried in vain to rub the sleep from her eyes to get a better look at her console. "Um, Captain, lady, sir?" She stuttered over words, her foggy brain was unsure of how to refer to her superior. "Our emergency channel is picking up a distress call." The pink-eyed girl quickly grabbed a set of headphones nearby. While putting them on, she began to feverishly punch buttons and turn knobs in an effort to focus in on the frequency of the call.

Another woman sitting reclined in a chair in the middle of the bridge, with fiery red hair and Jade green eyes nodded at the tech officer. "Okay then, do you think you could get a fix on it for me, Jamie?"

The green-haired woman shrugged her shoulders while still keeping at her task. "Kind of, but it keeps fading in and out..." She turned a few more knobs until she paused with a very puzzled look on her face. She blinked a view times with her mouth drawn to a small o, then turned to face her captain. "I think I got it, but there seems to be a message with it, but I can't understand a single word of it."

"Do you think they're someone from the Sin quadrant?" The red-headed captain asked herself as she sat up in her chair. "Cause I know that they always talk with a forked tongue or something so its always hard to understand them..."

Again Jamie shrugged.

"Well Kate...I mean Captain, do you want to follow the frequency?" The interrupting question caused the leader to turn her attention to the front of the ship where a woman with blue hair and violet eyes sat at a piloting console. The blue-haired woman seemed a tad irritated as she looked at the babbling captain from over her shoulder.

Instead of responding right away, the red-head paused as she tapped a finger to her chin and pondered the course of action she should take. After a couple minutes she shrugged her shoulders. "Why not, we have nothing else to do. Jamie! Give Beth the coordinates and lets go!"

Sweat beads appeared on her two subordinates as they gave nervous laughs at their leaders overly enthusiastic answer. After receiving an furious glare from the easily angered redhead, the two officers went back to work.

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

One hour later...

Kate stood in front of the view screen on the bridge with her forefinger against her chin with a deep look of contemplation apparent in her features. "You certain that this is where its coming from?" The captain eyed the object in their field of vision critically. "Such poor designers, that ship is definitely in distress..."

The view screen showed a large, blackish-grayish ship that looked a few years past its prime. The many scratches and holes said that it had seen its share of battles.

Beth growled as she stood up. "How about we stop critiquing the ship and find out why they're sending a distress signal." The blue-haired pilot turned to her captain who looked to have not heard a word she said and still stood looking at the screen with her arms crossed. The pilot growled again and turned to the green-haired woman. "Jamie? Did you scan the ship?:

Jamie blinked at the furious woman. "Scan the ship? Why do I need to scan our ship?"

The amethyst-eyed woman slapped her forehead. "I meant the other ship, what's going on with the other ship? Is there someone there?"

The cat-eyed girl snapped her fingers after fully understanding what the other woman was asking. "Oh yeah! Well, there are about four people onboard that ship, but each time I hail them, they don't respond."

The pilot smiled and thanked the girl through clenched teeth. She turned back to her captain and placed her hands on her hips. The redhead still had yet to budge. "Well Captain?" No response. "Seeing as how you two don't seem interested, I guess I'll be the only one to go see what's going on with our friends across the way." With that said, Beth extended her usually hidden wings and trudged out of the room.

Kate was pulled out of her reverie at the sound of the doors opening and closing. "What's with her?" The captain turned to her tech officer only to receive a clueless shrug. She turned her attention back to the bridge doors as if to expect her pilot to come storming back in. "She's been acting really weird this past month. I guess it could be because of out last run in with the Myns." The green-eyed leader sighed and finally walked across the bridge and through the doors, following her moody pilot.

The youngest of the three remained in the bridge, still playing with the strange frequency until the realization dawned on her that she was completely alone. After one final turn of knob that she had been working with, she took off her headphones , and in a blur, was off and following her friends.

Unfortunately for the trio, with that last turn of the knob, the reception finally came in clear. And what echoed through the empty bridge was an indistinguishable, out of tune song.

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

On board the black ship.

The three lone members of the white ship's crew wandered through the dark corridors of the ship in silence. The inside of the ship almost matched that of the outside. Panels of wires were exposed allowing thick tangles to spread across the floor, occasionally tripping one of the trio.

"This place is a treasure trove!" Jamie exclaimed stopping every now and then to salvage some stray piece of technology.

"Stop messing around. We don't know why this ship was sending a distress signal. There might be some sort of hostile life form on board." The captain had grabbed the green-haired woman by the arm to try to keep her put.

Jamie tried to struggle away, but Beth grabbed her by the other arm. Jamie stared at her serious companion. "What is it with you?"

Beth gave her a sideways glance and a low growl. "Shh, you're making to much noise with your struggling, just do as Kate says and stop scavenging."

Jamie bowed her head in defeat as the two companions released her. Again they found themselves walking in complete silence until each of their COM links crackled to life.

"WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING?"

The three fell over with sweat drops as they were suddenly interrupted by the most annoying voice imaginable.

"What are you doing on our emergency channel?" The tall curly haired captain yelled into the receiver.

"What moron gave her our channel in the first place?" The winged pilot grumbled, as she looked straight at Jamie.

Jamie laughed nervously. She began to fidget under Beth's intense glare. "Well, she asked for it, and since she started to cry, I thought that maybe she would start to get lonely and."

"Are you completely insane? How many times have we jettisoned her into space? Surely by now you'd understand that we do not wish any contact with .'it'!" The blue haired vixen yelled. She started to hyperventilate as she pictured being stuck with the creature again.

"Well, I just felt so bad for her." The green haired woman sniffled, as she turned to her captain trying to gain the sympathy for her actions.

"Might I remind you of that incident on the planet Talon?" The red head prodded, also giving the young woman a hard glare.

"What?"

The amethyst-eyed woman started to rub her temples to relieve the headache that was quickly coming on. "You know, the incident that almost cost us our lives?"

The cat-eyed girl opened her mouth to say something, but quickly shut it as she began to go into deeper thought. After a few minutes she snapped her fingers. "Do you mean the one with that evil emperor guy?"

The two companions nodded. "And the large ray cannon." The leader of the two gestured her hands as if to tell her to complete the thought.

"Oh I know!" The young woman shouted in triumph. "Isn't that the time where that emperor guy with the large ray cannon almost killed us?"

"By Jove, I think she's got it!" The winged woman responded with her voice dripping with sarcasm.

"And." The green-eyed woman continued. "Do you know who gave us away to the emperor so he could shoot that cannon at us?"

The youngest of the three started to think again. "Um.was that when Mindy came up behind us and shouted, 'HEY GUYS! I FINALLY FOUND YOU AFTER ALL THESE YEARS! WHAT ARE YOU DOING OVER HERE? ARE YOU HIDING FROM THAT MAN OVER THERE WITH THAT HUGE CANNON THING?"

"It's amazing." The winged eldest of the three commented. "She's a mechanical genius and yet her common sense and memory recall is nil."

"But we can't live without her." The captain added with a sigh.

"Unfortunately, but at least she's better than that monster that we call Mindy." Beth shuttered at the thought of the creature.

"That's the optimistic way of looking at it!" the youth replied as the other two shook their heads in disappointment.

Chapter One:

Prelude to a Curse

*`*`*

"HEY GUYS!" The annoying voice erupted over the ships intercom system. "I NEED HELP! THESE SINGING GUYS WITH GUNS AND HEAVY ARMOR ARE STARTING TO ANNOY ME!"

"Join the club." Beth rolled her eyes. "I also wonder, with an IQ as low as a rock, how she is even able to figure out how to use the intercom, for that matter, work the emergency channels."

Jamie ignored Beth's comments and turned to pull at her leaders sleeve, "Shouldn't we save her?"

Kate only shook her head; "I think she's getting the perfect punishment for her all her actions."

"But I feel so bad.hey wait is that a flux drive?"

The two other companions looked at Jamie in confusion as she stooped down and began digging at one of the open panels of the ship.

"At least she stopped giving us the guilt trip." Kate sighed in relief.

"Yeah, but unfortunately again, she has a point." Beth again began to message her temples.

"That's right!" Jamie rejoined the conversation, after salvaging the flux drive. "It's our duty as."

"Okay then, lets go." Kate waved on her companions with a less than thrilled look on her face.

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

Minutes later, just outside of the bridges door.

"This is new, actually saving the enemy." Beth dragged behind her two friends. Tears began to gather in her eyes. She knew that Mindy always followed her and once she was rescued, she would never leave her alone.

Jamie heard sniffles behind her and turned around on her heel and gave Beth a look of pity. "You know, I think you see the glass as half empty."

"No." Beth snapped after drying her eyes, "just empty."

"That is great and all, but lets focus on the mission now. The sooner we save her, the sooner we can jettison her again." Kate came in between the duo giving each a stern glare. "So with that said," The red head turned her full attention to Beth. "Do you hear anything?"

"I think.I'm hearing.a rendition of 'This is the Song That Never Ends'."

"I KNOW THAT SONG!" Jamie shouted with all the excitement of the universe. "'This is the song that never ends yes it goes on and on my friends. Some people started singing it.'"

"OKAY! That's enough of that!" Kate shouted as she covered the young woman's mouth with a gloved hand.

"But I can't stop now, it never ends!" Jamie pleaded through Kate's fingers that were still covering her mouth.

"So help us all if she ever reproduces." Beth retorted as she rolled her eyes.

"What do you mean?" Jamie caulked her head in confusion.

Kate shook her head and eyed both of them with irritation. "Lets just go in already, we're just out side the door now and it's the twentieth verse! All we have to do now is go in, get the monster, get out and let these guys be!" The captain was on the verge of having to beg to her two crewmembers to stop them from having these conversations before getting to work.

The pilot and the mechanic stopped to look at the weary captain and decided to give their conversation a break. "Kay." The two saluted their leader and opened the door to the bridge.

"This is the most horrifying scene that I have ever witnessed." Beth's eyes went wide as her incredible hearing began to pick up the out of tuned pitch in the air. "FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT'S GOOD AND HOLY! THAT CREATURE IS SINGING!"

"Everyone! Earplugs! NOW!" Kate barked the order as she shoved earplugs from her emergency kit on her belt into her ears.

"THAT WON'T HELP ME!" Beth broke down in tears after putting in her earplugs and finding that the persistent noise refused to go away.

Kate took note of her friend's distress but knew that she could do nothing but get the enemy to stop the torture. So she signaled for Jamie to ready herself for some major butt kicking as their pilot crouched down and began to rock back and forth while covering her ears and humming loudly.

As Kate began to run forward, a massive force ran right over her and straight to her humming friend on the floor. Kate stopped and turned around to see Mindy heading towards Beth. She took out her earplugs, and amazingly enough, the horrid sound had stopped.

"YOU SAVED ME!" Mindy threw her arms around Beth in thankfulness.

"REMEMBER WHAT WE TALKED ABOUT?" As Beth pushed her away in anger and fear as she stood up and struggled to pry herself from the large girl, "NO TOUCHING!"

Kate then turned around to observe the room. To her surprise there were no other occupants in the room, and was far more surprised when the ships intercom came on and addressed them.

"We give up! You can go free and make sure to take that tone deaf, freak of nature away. Far, far away from us!"

Kate sweat dropped. "Why am I not surprised that it turned this way?"

"THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! FOR SAVING MY LIFE, I'M ETERNALLY IN YOUR DEBT! I'M GOING TO STAY WITH YOU GUYS FOREVER AND EVER!"

"NOOOOOOOOOO!" The eldest two shouted in horror.

"YEA!" Jamie shouted with glee as she grabbed Mindy's hands and started to jump up and down with excitement. "Another rommie!"

"ROMMIE!" Mindy started jumping up and down with Jamie, causing the whole ship to shake.

"Oh the horror, the horror!" Beth pleaded helplessly as she collapsed to the floor once more in tears.

"Don't worry Beth." Kate placed a reassuring hand on her friend's quivering shoulder. Beth stopped crying and looked up at the smirking captain. "Mindy's going to repay her debt. She's going to go on a mission for us, a very secret and important mission. It's one that she might never return from.hopefully. And it's far away.far, far away."

Kate and Beth exchanged evil smiles and teleported off the ship leaving Mindy and Jamie behind to celebrate by themselves.

"Hey, where did they go?" Jamie stopped her celebration and looked around the empty bridge. "They left me behind again!"

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

"SO WHAT'S MY SECRET MISSION?" Mindy questioned Kate as she put on a space suit in the preparation room just outside the docking bay.

"It's a secret, we can't tell you, and you'll know when you get there." Kate smiled innocently at the ignorant creature.

After zipping up her suit she went over to Kate and nudged her with her elbow as she winked. "OH I SEE! IT'S A HUSH-HUSH THING, IS IT?"

Kate nodded and put a hand on the strange girls arm to stop her from nudging her. "First you have to go to.ah.Epsin thirteen."

"But there isn't a Epsin thirteen." Jamie interrupted as she entered the small room with a smirking Beth in tow.

"Ah, but there is, it's just a secret, only a select few know of it's remote location."

Jamie stopped and thought for a bit till she nodded her okay.

"Anyway," Kate continued, putting a friendly arm around Mindy's back. "You must find Epsin Thirteen and tell the ruler of the secret city.uh.Sarine, that.uh.you must have the fabled.um.star.shooter thingy so.um you can conquer.um.Epsin fourteen's.trinick."

"I'm beginning to see that you're running out of ideas." Beth telepathically chided Kate.

"Shut up." The captain threw an icy stare in the pilot's direction.

"WHAT?" Mindy looked even more confused than before the explanation. "I DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING!"

"Um.I mean," Kate gave Beth an even darker glare. "What I meant by 'shut up' was.uh.that.it's.ah.the code word.yeah! That it, it's the code word to get the fabled star gun.I mean shooter from the ruler of Sarine."

Beth could hardly control her laughter as Kate stuttered out a hurried explanation.

"Are you feeling okay Kate?" Jamie went over to her friend and felt her forehead to check for a fever.

"Yes Jamie I'm fine." Kate brushed away Jamie's hand and proceeded into the docking bay with her arm still around Mindy's shoulders. "And I'll feel even better when Mindy is safely on her way on her secret mission." Kate smiled to herself with delight. The future never looked brighter to her.

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

Minutes later in the docking bay.

"Wait! You can't send her in that! I haven't fixed it yet!" Jamie begged as Kate guided the creature to a, what would be white, beat up, heavily damaged cruiser.

"Don't worry, she'll be fine." The red head brushed off Jamie's protest. "Any ways why would we waste a perfectly good cruiser on her.I mean.um."

Beth snickered again at her captain's predicament.

"What are you guys hiding?" Jamie looked questioningly at both of her companions.

"Nothing, nothing at all." Kate laughed nervously and quickly ran up to Jamie and whispered in her ear. "But I do know there is a puppy on board."

"Really Kate? Where?" Jamie began to jump up and down with anticipation.

"It's.uh.hiding! On deck.um." The captain's mind was beginning to strain from all the lying. This was the first time in a while that she had to do so much of it.

"Ten!" Beth aided her poor exhausted friend.

"COOL! Sorry I can't see you leave Mindy, but good luck!" Jamie gave Mindy a quick hug and ran out of the bay at top speed on her wild goose chase.

Both Kate and Beth sighed in relief.

"SO ARE YOU GOING TO GIVE ME SOME FOOD?" Mindy got the two's attention. She was holding out her hands as if expecting an offering of some kind.

"No, it's only a few light years away, you'll be fine. Trust me." Kate patted her back, and then shoved her in the small beat up ship. "And remember, 'shut up'."

Mindy gave her thumbs up and jumped into the cockpit of the cruiser. She readied herself for take off after a brief explanation of operation of controls from Kate.

Beth and Kate both ran from the ship and went a safe distance away as the force field activated so no air would escape and the bay doors slowly opened to allow the small ship passage out.

The cruiser's engines sparked and roared to life after a few sputters and the ship slowly but surely lifted off the ground shot straight out of the bay only to come back minutes later embedded in the side of a larger red cruiser.

Both Beth and Kate started to cry when Mindy exited the smaller ship, giving a nervous obnoxious laugh. She shakily pointed at the red ship, "THIS SHIP RAN INTO ME!"

"Hey! Where's the puppy and why are you guys crying?" Jamie appeared behind crying captain and pilot seemingly out of from nowhere.

Beth pointed to the two crashed ships as more tears flowed from her eyes.

"Hey! That was quick! She's back from her mission already!" Jamie bounded towards the two ships.

Jamie went eagerly towards the white cruiser to greet her friend but stopped in mid stride when the larger ship's door opened to reveal a very angry, yet handsome man. He looked to be a little taller than Kate, had dark orange eyes, long tan and brown that was tied into a low ponytail, and was wearing a navy blue space suit.

"Hello!" The man greeted with a slightly aggravated tinge to his voice. "I was out cruising around when suddenly, out of nowhere, this young.this young." He gestured in Mindy's direction and jumped when he turned to look at her and noticed her face. "'Thing' happened to crash right into me. I think.'it'.I mean she belongs to you."

"No she doesn't." Beth got up from the floor, dried her tears and ran over to the man to shoo him back into his ship.

"What are talking about Beth, she's our friend!" Jamie protested as she pulled on her arm to stop her from shoving the confused man.

Kate gave the young man the sweetest most innocent smile she could muster. "Don't listen to Jamie, her senses have temporarily left her. What she really means is that that creature is an acquaintance that is on a 'secret mission' for us and it's really important for her to go there."

Mindy went up to the now frightened man and scolded him. "THAT'S RIGHT! IT'S A SECRET! I HAVE TO GO TO EPSIN THIRTEEN RIGHT AWAY!"

Kate slapped her forehead.

"Epsin Thirteen? Never heard of it." The man caulked his head and gave the red-haired captain a searching look.

"THAT'S CAUSE IT'S A SECRET!" Mindy yelled into the ear of the unfortunate young man.

The man only nodded and gestured for her to step away from him as he looked at the others for help. "Since I'm here, could you guys fix my ship? After all you are the ones who shot this creature at me."

"WHY ARE YOU GUYS CALLING ME THAT? IS THAT MY CODE NAME? IT SOUNDS SO MYSTERIOUS AND COOL! I LIKE IT!"

Everyone except Jamie shook their heads in pity for the poor ignorant 'thing'.

Jamie stepped towards the brunette man. "I can fix your ship for you!" She gave him victory sign and a wink. "After all that's why I'm here! To fix.things!"

"I'd be much obliged." The ginger-eyed man stepped closer to the young woman giving her a bright smile. "Especially for a cute young thing like yourself to do the repairs. Until then, I guess I'm stuck here with you beautiful women. Just one thing though.when is the creature leaving?"

"Right now!" Beth ran turned to Mindy and pushed her towards another beat up cruiser.

"Hey! That one isn't ready either!" Jamie shouted after the blue- haired woman.

"I said it's okay!" Kate reiterated as she moved to stop Jamie form interfering. "Now go Mindy, before it's too late!"

"BUT KAT! WHICH DIRECTION DO I GO?" Mindy tried to stop Beth from pushing her for a minute, but was unsuccessful.

"Why are you calling me Kat, and by the way it's a secret, remember?"

Mindy nodded her understanding and replied, "KAT IS THE CODE NAME I GAVE YOU!"

Kate could hear snickers from her companions. "Don't EVER use it again, or I'll be forced to punch you, and you know with my vast strength that would hurt. I trust you know what pain is don't you?"

Mindy nodded quickly.

"Good. That means next time, we get to move on to shapes and colors. NOW GO!"

*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*`*

Jamie was working on the young man's ship, as he looked on in wonder. Her great speed seemed to fascinate him.

"I see you are one endowed with special abilities, not many are. What exactly can you do? Besides 'fix things' that is." He watched as Jamie maneuvered around until she stopped underneath the ship, obviously having a bit of trouble with some wires.

"Well.um.mister.uh.what is your name?" Jamie began to reach for a tool as she tried to hold some wires in place, but could just barely touch it. The young brunette handed Jamie the allusive tool, receiving a thankful smile in return. "Kain, just call me Kain."

"Well Mister Kain, I'm very mechanically inclined, so whatever you want built, I can do. I'm also good at manipulating fire, and plus I'm super fast."

"So I noticed. And your friends?"

"Well." Jamie finished what she was doing and came out from under the ship to talk to Kain face to face. She stared to clean he soiled hands on a piece of cloth as she thought for a moment. "Kate's our leader. She is really strong, in other words, if she wanted to she could play catch with your ship. She also has the ability to fly, and she's really smart when it come to medicine and herbs. She can make sleeping powder, stun powder, healing potions.just about anything."

Kain took a minute to absorb the information. "Wow, the doctor's the leader. Interesting."

"She's also very good with coming up with strategies on the spur of the moment. She can get us out of the worst situations imaginable."

"Is that all?" Kain interrupted the girl, afraid that the captain's ability list went on forever. Jamie nodded. " So, what use is the other one?"

"You mean Beth?" The brunette nodded. "Well Beth can fly, that's obvious since she has wings."

Kain put his hand up to signal for her to stop. "Wait. I didn't see any wings."

Jamie thought for a bit. "Oh! That's cause she is able to retract them. There is kind of a funny story to go along with that. One day Kate and I were on the bridge and we heard some one struggling with something and low and behold, Beth was at the door shouting about how bad her day was going, and that she couldn't even get in the door. And I said, 'why don't you try to retract your wings?' Right then and there I thought she was going to kill me."

Kain put a finger to the girl's mouth to stop her from saying anymore, causing her to blush. "That is funny and all, but please continue." Jamie nodded slowly and Kain removed his finger.

"Beth is also our ace pilot, the best that I have seen anyway. When it comes to shooting things, she's a very good shot. She can also move things with her mind and read others thoughts. Her telepathic abilities are a big help because then she can sense the presence of others and their intentions. Her senses are also very sharp. She can hear and see things that are great distances away. Her sense of smell is also very keen."

"No wonder she seems so angry." Kain thought out loud.

"What?" Jamie looked at him with confusion written all over her face.

"Nothing. So do you guys go around helping people or what?"

"We like to help those in need. After all, it is the right thing to do, especially since we're able to kick major butt."

Kain smiled at the girl's enthusiasm when she started to punch at an invisible enemy. "I wish I could be as innocent as you."

"What do you mean?" Jamie stopped what she was doing and stared at him as if trying to figure out his cryptic speech.

Kain paused for a bit, his face showing a moment of distress. He then realized that the young woman was still giving him a quizzical look and gave her a sad smile. "It doesn't matter. It's nothing that you need to worry about anyway. But can I ask you something?"

"Shoot."

Kain gave her a more convincing smile. "Why is that you have such a large ship for the three of you and why are three of your cruisers heavily damaged, aside from the fact that one of them ran into my ship?"

Jamie began to look nervous, twirling a piece of hair with her fingers. She then plastered a huge, fake smile on her face. "Um.I have to go now, your ship's fixed so feel free to leave anytime." The cat-eyed woman turned on her heel and started towards the other damaged cruiser for more repair work.

Kain reached for her arm and turned her around. He gave her a kind smile. "Sorry for upsetting you. But I am in need of some food and rest before I even think about going anywhere. So is it all right if I stay here for a little while."

Jamie's nervousness melted away and was replaced with a smile. "Well in that case I'll take you to the kitchen and inform of your plans."

"Thanks. Much appreciated." Kain then extended his arm for Jamie to take it so he could escort her. The green-haired woman blushed at his gesture and eyed him for a few seconds. She nervously decided to take his arm and they left the bay together.
